The Dutch coach has been out of work for more than a year after leaving his position as PSV manager. Van Nistelrooy has a wealth of experience as a coach and has taken over at PSV.

Frank Lampard had previously emerged as a contender but now appears unlikely to succeed Kompany.

However, Burnley want to bring in him as manager to replace Vincent Kompany, who left to manage Bayern Munich last month.
